National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac stated on Thursday that during the U.S.-Korea summit, President Lee Jae Myung officially requested nuclear-powered conventional submarines from President Donald Trump. Wi explained that it determined that acquiring nuclear submarine capabilities is necessary to effectively respond to evolving conditions on the Korean Peninsula, which is why it engaged in discussions with the U.S. counterparts.

During an appearance on MBC News that day, Wi highlighted that North Korea has developed nuclear weapons and has even announced plans to develop nuclear submarines.

Regarding the introduction of nuclear-powered conventional submarines, he noted that this topic was also discussed during the August summit. Since those initial talks didn't yield significant progress, it decided to raise the issue again this time.

Addressing President Lee's public request to President Trump for a decision on supplying fuel for nuclear-powered submarines, Wi stated that the statement was prepared in advance. It believes the public nature of this request demonstrates the commitment to actively strengthening national security in response to emerging threats.

On revising the U.S.-Korea nuclear agreement, Wi expressed optimism, saying that it sought greater latitude in uranium enrichment and nuclear fuel reprocessing. The U.S. has been receptive to advancing discussions in this direction. President Trump showed understanding and directed both sides to make substantial progress through working-level talks.

Regarding the failure to arrange a U.S.-North Korea summit during President Trump's visit, Wi commented that the conditions aren't yet ripe for such a high-level meeting. However, President Trump has repeatedly expressed willingness to meet and mentioned returning to South Korea for another opportunity. They'll have to see how things develop.

On the agenda for the upcoming South Korea-China summit scheduled for Saturday, Wi said that it aims to address peace on the Korean Peninsula. A key objective is to advance denuclearization efforts and ensure stability in the region.

Wi interpreted the breakthrough in tariff negotiations during the recent U.S.-Korea summit as a reflection of the trust and consideration built through decades of alliance.
