On November 5, 1913, the legendary British actress Vivien Leigh was born in Darjeeling, British India. Destined to portray one of cinema's most iconic characters, Scarlett O'Hara, Leigh's birth marked the beginning of a career that would set the silver screen ablaze.

Enchanted by the stage from an early age, Leigh honed her craft at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Her meteoric rise began in 1935 with her breakout role in "The Mask of Virtue," a performance that not only catapulted her to London's theatrical spotlight but also introduced her to Laurence Olivier, the era's preeminent actor who would become her lifelong partner and artistic muse.

Leigh's ascent to Hollywood royalty was cemented by her role in the 1939 epic "Gone with the Wind." Beating astronomical odds of 1,400 to 1, she clinched the coveted role of Scarlett O'Hara, the feisty Southern belle. Her portrayal of a woman who perseveres through war and ruin, famously declaring "Tomorrow is another day," resonated with audiences worldwide. This tour de force performance made her the first British actress to take home an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Never content to rest on her laurels, Leigh continually pushed her artistic boundaries. In 1951, she delivered a tour de force performance as the fragile and neurotic Blanche DuBois in Elia Kazan's "A Streetcar Named Desire." Her raw and nuanced portrayal earned her a second Oscar, solidifying her status as one of the greatest actresses of her generation.

Yet, behind the glitz and glamour, Leigh fought private battles. Plagued by chronic tuberculosis and severe bipolar disorder, she endured grueling treatments and medication regimens. Despite these challenges, her dedication to her craft never wavered. Leigh's method of fully immersing herself in her characters, while artistically rewarding, often took a toll on her mental and physical health.

Leigh's light dimmed too soon when she passed away on July 8, 1967, at the age of 53. However, her artistic legacy continues to captivate audiences a century later. She is remembered not just for her stunning beauty, but as a consummate artist who brought depth, complexity, and raw emotion to every role she embodied.
