The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is establishing a platform to facilitate communication between South Korean biotech firms and regulatory authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), aiming to support their market entry.

This initiative seeks to provide American companies with direct insight into the UAE's drug approval and review processes, effectively transforming regulatory cooperation into concrete export opportunities.

The MFDS announced that on Tuesday, it will host a meeting between a seven-member delegation from the UAE's medical product regulatory agency (EDE), led by Director Fatima Al Qabi, and domestic biotech companies.

The gathering will include MFDS Bio-Pharmaceutical Bureau Chief Ahn Young-jin, the EDE delegation, and representatives from four biotech firms: BioSolutions, Corestem ChemOn, Cha Bio Tech, and Organoid Science.

Participating companies will showcase their key products and technologies to the EDE delegation and outline their specific strategies for entering the UAE market. They will also have the opportunity to directly inquire about the review processes and requirements for obtaining product approvals in the UAE.

Recently, South Korea and the UAE have been expanding their regulatory cooperation in the medical products sector, including pharmaceuticals. This strengthened collaboration between regulatory authorities will enable companies to quickly grasp the UAE's approval systems and documentation requirements, thereby mitigating uncertainties in the market entry process.

The UAE has emerged as a key player in the Middle Eastern biotech and healthcare market, with government initiatives aimed at fostering advanced medical industries. As South Korean biotech firms look to use the UAE as a launchpad for expanding their presence in the Middle East, regulatory cooperation between the two nations becomes increasingly crucial.

Following the meeting, the EDE delegation will tour BioSolutions' cell and gene therapy (CGT) research facility in Seoul's Mapo district.

The delegation plans to observe the research environment where cell therapy research, analysis, and process development take place, as well as inspect key research facilities and equipment. This visit aims to provide the UAE officials with a firsthand look at the research and development (R&D) capabilities and technological prowess of advanced biopharmaceuticals.

Cell and gene therapies are cutting-edge biopharmaceuticals that harness patients' cells or genes to treat diseases. These innovative therapies are being developed as novel treatment options for rare and intractable diseases that have proven challenging to address with conventional medications.

A MFDS spokesperson stated that this visit will not only showcase the exceptional technological capabilities of the advanced biopharmaceuticals to UAE regulatory authorities but also provide the companies with a valuable opportunity to directly verify the regulatory information needed for entering the UAE market.

The spokesperson added that it will continue to actively promote field-centered regulatory diplomacy to transform the cooperation network with overseas regulatory agencies into tangible export opportunities, supporting the global market entry of biotech innovations.
