Major U.S. beauty retailers are witnessing a surge in K-beauty brands entering their offline markets. CJ Olive Young's recent expansion, including standalone stores and a Sephora partnership, is turning heads in the North American beauty scene.

Industry insiders revealed on Tuesday that Olive Young's K-Beauty Edit made its grand debut on August 20 in over 580 Sephora stores across the U.S., as well as on their online platform. This impressive rollout covers about 87% of Sephora's 670 U.S. locations.

The K-Beauty Edit is a curated collection of approximately 150 products from 19 trendsetting brands, including fan favorites like Rejuran, Witch's Pouch, and Banila Co. Focusing on high-demand items such as serums, creams, and sun care, the edit offers a one-stop shop for the complete K-beauty experience, featuring everything from toner pads to sheet masks.

This launch follows Olive Young's recent openings of standalone stores in Pasadena and Los Angeles earlier this year. The brand's clever two-pronged approach showcases a wide array of K-beauty products in its own stores while offering a carefully selected range at Sephora, making K-beauty more accessible to curious newcomers.

North American Exports Up 36.8% in H1, Cementing Its Status as K-Beauty’s Biggest Market

The rush of South Korean beauty brands into North America's brick-and-mortar scene is fueled by the region's explosive market growth.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reports that U.S. cosmetics imports hit a staggering 1.45 billion USD in the first half of this year - a jaw-dropping 41.5% increase. The U.S. now gobbles up 20.7% of total Korean cosmetic exports, maintaining its newly-crowned status as the top importer after dethroning China last year.

K-beauty's secret weapon? Skincare. Basic skincare product exports to the U.S. surged by 360 million USD in the first half of the year, up 48.6% from last year. While personal cleansing products also saw a healthy 36.4% boost, color cosmetics experienced a slight 0.7% dip. This trend aligns perfectly with Olive Young's skincare-focused strategy at Sephora.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups' analysis of customs data revealed that small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) cosmetics exports reached an impressive 5.07 billion USD, up 30.7%. North American exports specifically jumped from 780 million USD to 1.06 billion USD, marking a 36.8% increase.

As North America becomes the beauty industry's golden goose, major K-beauty brands are doubling down on their offline presence.

APR is shaking things up by diversifying Mediheal's U.S. distribution. They're branching out from Ulta Beauty to big-name retailers like Target and Walmart Inc.

After successfully launching in over 1,500 Target stores in April, they've expanded to roughly 3,000 Walmart Inc locations since June. The company is also eyeing potential partnerships with retail giants like Costco Wholesale Corporation and CVS Pharmacy for the latter half of the year.

An APR spokesperson dished that they're in talks about the nitty-gritty details of the new distribution channels - think timelines, store numbers, and product lineups.

They added that it's not putting all the eggs in one basket. The game plan is to grow both online with Amazon and offline with Target, Walmart Inc, and Ulta Beauty. It's tailoring the product offerings and marketing strategies to each channel's unique vibe.

Goodai Global is playing the field, targeting different distribution networks for each of its brands. They're cozying up to Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Target, Costco Wholesale Corporation, and Nordstrom, all while beefing up their own local distribution game.

Chosun Beauty made its Sephora debut in 420 U.S. stores last July and has since expanded to over 640 locations. Factor in the Sephora counters inside Kohl's, and they're now reaching customers at around 1,496 points of sale. They're aiming to bump that up to over 1,800 by year's end.

Before 2026 wraps up, Chosun Beauty plans to roll out dedicated displays in more than 660 standalone Sephora stores across the U.S. Looking ahead to 2027, they're plotting a gradual expansion of both their product range and store presence, guided by local demand and sales data.

The brand's portfolio is diversifying its retail strategy too. Tirtir is zeroing in on the color cosmetics market through Amazon and Ulta Beauty. Meanwhile, Skin 1004 is spreading its wings across Target, Ulta Beauty, Costco Wholesale Corporation, TJX, and Kroger for everyday accessibility, while also maintaining a chic flagship store in New York's SoHo district.

Round Lab has cast a wide net, expanding to Target, Ulta Beauty, CVS, and Costco Wholesale Corporation. All told, they now boast over 4,000 offline touchpoints across the U.S.

In a savvy move, Goodai Global has rebranded its newly acquired U.S. K-beauty distributor, Hanseong USA, as Goodai Global USA. This revamp streamlines everything from local sales and logistics to supply chain management and channel-specific retail marketing strategies.

A Goodai Global rep spilled the tea: It's not just about introducing products overseas anymore. The focus is on creating an ecosystem where local consumers can easily discover, fall in love with, and repurchase the products.
