This insight came from a participant at Bio Korea 2026, which launched on Tuesday at the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX) in Seoul, after exploring the K-Health Future Promotion Team's booth. The participant, who has a keen interest in space medicine, engaged in an extended conversation with the researcher responsible for the Protein Crystallization Growth Device Utilizing Space Environment exhibit, exchanging business cards and discussing various topics.

This exhibition marks the first public presentation of outcomes from the initiative, which has been in progress for about two years since the team's inception in March 2024.

Project managers (PMs) overseeing five mission-specific areas—health security, unmet diseases, biohealth, welfare and care, and essential medical services—are currently sharing identified challenges and discussing potential solutions with various stakeholders.

Project leader Director Seon-gyeong emphasized that this isn't about developing new technologies or products. They're focusing on eliminating factors that harm public health and addressing societal issues. The approach is distinctly different, concentrating on social and humanistic aspects rather than purely scientific ones.

The team is currently planning, selecting, and managing tasks based on five government-proposed missions: establishing health security, overcoming unmet diseases, securing cutting-edge biohealth technologies, improving welfare and care services, and building regionally integrated essential medical systems.

From April 20 to 23, the team hosted Proposal Day, where PMs and stakeholders gathered to share challenges and discuss solutions. Some interim research results were publicly disclosed at Bio Korea.

The exhibition featured diverse research topics addressing healthcare challenges, including mobile vaccine production for infectious disease response, daily disease prediction and management, space-based drug and organ development, and muscle aging diagnosis and personalized management. Researchers from industry and academia participated in the presentations.

PM Kim Jae-wook, researching space-based medical challenges, stated that they're using microgravity environments to find aging-related biomarkers. Young researchers and companies are showing interest, but commercialization requires considering support systems, policy design, and institutional connections alongside technology development.

An Inha University Hospital representative, involved in sarcopenia treatment models, introduced their muscle contraction measurement and three-dimensional (3D) movement analysis system. They emphasized that diagnosing aging through muscle assessment and providing personalized prescriptions could enable early diagnosis and tailored management of muscle aging.

Following this year's successful promotional booth, the team plans to expand next year by adding experience zones, making government initiatives more accessible to the public.

A team representative noted that it chose a more visible location this year. The strong interest in the projects on the first day enhanced the policy promotion efforts. This will help expand the research into industry and global cooperation, addressing healthcare challenges that threaten public health.
