The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Wednesday that the standard for Intelligent Edge Computing-Based Public Decision-Making Framework Data Management Interface (ITU-T Q.5036) received final approval as an international standard. This approval came during the International Telecommunication Union's Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 3 to 11.

Intelligent edge computing is a cutting-edge distributed computing technology that analyzes and processes data in real-time using artificial intelligence (AI) at the source, rather than relying on a central server. This approach significantly reduces latency and enables swift policy responses.

The newly approved standard outlines the data management structure and protocols essential for implementing AI-based policy intelligence. It encompasses data pipelines, automated workflows for policy execution, and robust governance systems for ensuring data security and quality.

ETRI researchers spearheaded the development of this new standard from initial proposal to final approval, establishing an international benchmark in the field of AI for public policy decision-making. Previously, the disparity in data management systems and security policies among agencies posed significant challenges for integration and utilization. This new standard aims to unify these systems, paving the way for the practical application of AI policy intelligence technology.

Dr. Lee Yeon-hee, Director of ETRI's Financial and Economic Policy Intelligence Research Center, stated that this international standard validates that the public decision-making AI technology meets global benchmarks. It's committed to actively promoting the expansion of policy intelligence and fostering international collaboration in the future.

Dr. Yoo Tae-wan, a principal researcher at ETRI, emphasized that the synergy between AI and data is a cornerstone of digital government. This international standard will drive innovation in public services and enhance policy effectiveness.

This milestone is the result of the AI and Data-Based Financial and Economic Digital Twin Platform Development project, supported by the Ministry of Science and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the National Information Society Agency. It also stems from ETRI's fundamental research initiative on Development of Highly Reliable Policy Intelligence Technology Based on AI and Big Data.
