HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured a landmark contract with Apperion Energy Group (AEG), a U.S. energy infrastructure developer, to supply 20MW-class HiMSEN engine-based power generation equipment, the company announced on Wednesday.

The deal, valued at approximately 627.1 billion KRW (about 424 million USD), covers a total capacity of 684MW, making it the largest power generation engine contract in HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' history. These power units are slated for use in data center power infrastructure, where reliable, high-capacity electricity supply is crucial.

The 20MW-class HiMSEN engines to be supplied are large-capacity, medium-speed units renowned for their industry-leading efficiency and reliability. Their high output, rapid start-up capabilities, and robust load management have expanded their applications beyond marine propulsion and land-based power plants. Now, they're poised to serve data centers, where 24/7 uninterrupted operation is essential.

This contract marks HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' debut in the U.S. data center market. The sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by the proliferation of generative AI services and increased investment in cloud infrastructure. According to a February report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), U.S. electricity demand is projected to rise steadily through 2030, with data centers accounting for half of this increase.

In response to these market trends, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to leverage its HiMSEN engine lineup to expand into diverse sectors, including data centers, industrial power, and emergency and auxiliary power systems. The company aims to accelerate its market penetration by capitalizing on its advanced engine technology and comprehensive service capabilities in construction and operations.

Han Joo-seok, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine Machinery Business, stated that this contract represents a significant milestone in the entry into the U.S. data center market. It intends to build on this success to strengthen the foothold in North America and continue to develop new opportunities across various power generation sectors, including data centers.
