Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have attacked Israel for the first time since the outbreak of the Iran-Israel war. The Houthis’ involvement could increase the likelihood of the conflict escalating. In fact, when the Gaza War broke out in October 2023, the Houthis fired missiles at Israel and attacked civilian ships passing through the Red Sea, disrupting maritime traffic. While the Red Sea is gaining attention as an alternative shipping route bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, it remains another bottleneck because it requires passing through the Yemeni coast controlled by the Houthi rebels and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
