LG Display announced on Friday that it will commence mass production of a 27-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) monitor panel, achieving a peak brightness of 1,500 nits, utilizing its proprietary fourth-generation OLED technology known as Primary Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) Tandem.

LG Display has also successfully developed a product boasting an industry-leading 540 hertz (Hz) refresh rate. With mass production of the 540 Hz panel slated to begin in the latter half of this year, LG Display is poised to secure the Triple Crown title by achieving world-leading brightness, refresh rate, and response time (0.03 ms) through its proprietary technology.

LG Display Achieves World's Highest Brightness of 1,500 Nits with Proprietary Technology 

The 27-inch OLED monitor panel incorporates LG Display's proprietary Primary RGB Tandem technology, delivering an unprecedented brightness of 1,500 nits and a 280 Hz refresh rate. This innovative technology stacks the three primary colors of light (red, green, blue) into four distinct layers, maximizing contrast for a more vivid and accurate display.

The panel also boasts an industry-leading color reproduction rate of 99.5%, making it ideal for professional content creation environments such as film production and color grading.

A standout feature is the elimination of ghosting, a common issue that significantly impacts gaming experiences. LG Display has effectively blocked 99% of internal and external light reflections through enhancements in the panel's internal structure and the use of specialized films. This ensures optimal picture quality without color distortion, even in bright environments with 500 lux lighting, equivalent to a sunlit living room.

These advancements have earned LG Display certifications for perfect black levels, complete color consistency, and 100% color fidelity from global certification bodies including UL Solutions and Intertek.

Breaking the Barrier: World's First 540 Hz High Refresh Rate 

LG Display has successfully developed an OLED panel for monitors that simultaneously achieves a 540Hz refresh rate and Quad High Definition (QHD) resolution. This groundbreaking 540 Hz refresh rate means the screen updates 540 times per second, delivering unparalleled performance in fast-paced games, such as first-person shooters (FPS) and racing simulations.

Industry experts have long considered refresh rates beyond 500 Hz as an insurmountable barrier due to significant drops in image quality. However, LG Display has overcome this limitation by developing and implementing a proprietary algorithm. The company plans to begin mass production of the 540 Hz refresh rate panel as early as the second half of this year.

Notably, by implementing the DFR (Dynamic Frame Rate) technology, independently developed by LG Display last year, the panel can achieve up to 720 Hz at high-definition (HD) resolution. This innovative DFR technology allows users to select their preferred refresh rate mode.

Achieving a 0.03 ms Response Time: 33.3 Times Faster Than LCDs 

LG Display's OLED panel for monitors boasts an industry-leading response time of 0.03 ms, significantly outperforming liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors, which typically have a maximum response time of 1.0 ms.

The OLED panel meets the highest standard set by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), known as ClearMR 21000, by combining its 0.03 ms response time with a 540 Hz refresh rate. A higher ClearMR rating indicates superior screen quality, clarity, and reduced motion blur.

LG Display plans to initiate mass production of the 540 Hz OLED gaming panel in the second half of this year, following the completion of product launch reviews by major global manufacturers.

Lee Hyun Woo, Senior Vice President and Head of the Large Business Unit at LG Display, stated that OLED monitors are rapidly gaining market share due to their perfect blacks and fast response times—features that are fundamentally unattainable with LCD monitors. Furthermore, it will leverage the Triple Crown OLED monitors, based on proprietary technologies that its competitors cannot replicate, to deliver unparalleled value to customers and further strengthen its market dominance.
