LG Display plans to mass-produce an ultra-large vehicle display solution to lead the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) era.

 The company announced on Monday that it will be the first in the industry to mass-produce a 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar (P2P) display.

 The Pillar to Pillar display is a sizeable in-vehicle screen that extends from the left edge of the windshield pillar on the driver’s side to the right edge on the passenger side.

 As SDVs rely on software to control vehicle performance and enhance driving convenience, large displays capable of visualizing various information and enabling function control are essential. With its advanced technology, the Pillar-to-Pillar display stands out as the next-generation mobility display.

 LG Display aims to maximize the utility of advanced SDV features with its 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar display, delivering personalized infotainment experiences for both drivers and passengers.

 The display simultaneously shows driving information, such as the instrument console, navigation, climate control, entertainment options, and games, without switching screens, enhancing user convenience.

 Unlike existing vehicle displays, where climate control or entertainment features often obscure the navigation screen, the 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar display allows users to access various information at a glance while efficiently controlling vehicle functions.

 LG Display has integrated its pioneering SPM (Switchable Privacy Mode) technology to promote safe driving. This industry-first feature allows passengers to watch movies or play games on their display section without distracting the driver, as the content remains invisible from the driver’s seat. The display maintains ultra-high definition while controlling the viewing angle towards the driver’s side.

 Moreover, LG Display has applied local dimming technology for the first time in automotive displays. This reduces heat generation and power consumption, improving driving efficiency and battery life.

 The touch-enabled ultra-large screen allows users to control various functions, minimizing the need for physical buttons in the vehicle and paving the way for innovative future mobility designs.

 LG Display’s 40-inch Pillar-to-Pillar display will debut in Afeela, the first sedan from Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Sony and Honda.

 Afeela is a high-tech electric vehicle that combines Sony’s advanced IT and entertainment technology with Honda’s vehicle manufacturing expertise. The ultra-large display is designed to maximize the effectiveness of AI-based driving assistance systems and various entertainment features.
